Software AG Expands Real-Time Data Interoperability for Mainframe and Open Systems - Zibb.com
RESTON, Va., Jun 23, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) --
Software AG, a global leader in business infrastructure software, today extended the company's commitment to fostering real-time, standards-based data interoperability between mainframe and open systems with the release of two new products. Users of the company's Natural programming language can now take advantage of Natural SQL Gateway to more easily access data stored on leading open systems SQL databases, including Oracle, DB2, Sybase and Microsoft SQL server. Event Replicator for Adabas on Open Systems provides real-time replication of Adabas data across databases running on popular open systems, including UNIX, Linux and Windows.
These releases are part of Software AG's $50M commitment annually over the next three years to research & development for Adabas and Natural. As one of the world's most deployed mainframe databases, Adabas serves as the foundation for core transactional systems for one in five of the Global 500. Natural, Software AG's widely adopted business application development and deployment environment, is recognized for the speed and efficiency it offers for creating highly-scalable enterprise systems running on either mainframe or open systems platforms.
"Our customers tell us that data is what drives their businesses. As a result, they are under increasing pressure to leverage it across as many platforms as possible. At the same time, they also need to protect its integrity as maintaining 'one version of the truth' is often critical to business operations and continuity," said Dr. Peter Kurpick, Software AG's Chief Product Officer and member of the company's Executive Board. "Our latest releases respond to these needs by providing users with a 'faster, cheaper, better' way of exchanging real-time Adabas and Natural data between mainframes and other enterprise systems. This means that enterprises can use, process and manipulate information in new and more powerful ways with full confidence in the underlying integrity of the data. From an operational perspective, we've significantly improved developer productivity, which lowers development costs while ensuring that new solutions are delivered to the business faster."
Natural SQL Gateway
Designed for simplicity, reliability and speed, Natural 2006 is a powerful development platform for creating enterprise transactional systems that support Web services, open source environments and Ajax-based Rich Internet Applications. Building on this value proposition, Natural SQL Gateway is a turnkey solution that allows Natural applications running on the mainframe to easily access data from third-party relational database management systems (RDBMS), such as DB2, Oracle, Sybase and Microsoft SQL server, operating on open systems.
Natural SQL Gateway can be employed to provide users with a more comprehensive, unified view of data spanning multiple applications and databases. By consolidating access to this information within a single application, users can take full advantage of their existing Natural-based applications to analyze and leverage this data. It can also be used to shift non-mission-critical data from mainframe systems to lower cost hardware platforms.
From a developer perspective, Natural SQL Gateway eliminates the need for additional middleware, provides rapid access to targeted data using simple Natural commands, and allows users to fully leverage existing SQL syntax. This simpler approach minimizes the need for additional training while boosting developer productivity dramatically.
Event Replicator for Adabas on Open Systems
With processing speeds of over 300,000 transactions per second, Adabas 2006 is recognized for its superior reliability and ultra-high performance. Event Replicator for Adabas on Open Systems uses SQL to automatically replicate Adabas data across third-party databases and messaging systems operating on open systems.
This ensures that core business data is instantly accessible by a number of other critical operating systems, including business intelligence (BI) tools and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, so that all users are operating off of the most complete, up-to-date data possible. For example, transactional systems and data warehouses often have competing requirements, which means that data is frequently stored in separate data stores. Rather than continuing to rely on obsolete data and batch transfers, Event Replicator for Adabas on Open Systems can be used to automatically and confidently update this data, as needed.
From a technical perspective, Event Replicator for Adabas on Open Systems offers the ability to publish discrete data elements and selected content directly from the Adabas nucleus. This avoids the time consuming and costly need to replicate and process the entire Protection Log (PLOG) record. In comparison with traditional PLOG-based approaches, Event Replicator for Adabas on Open Systems is a real-time solution, more scalable, and with less data to manage, is less costly to operate as well.
"Our product development strategy is focused on a simple objective, which is helping our customers realize greater value from their existing investments," said Joe Gentry, Senior Vice President and CTO for the ETS business division of Software AG. "With our latest releases, we're working to eliminate barriers to how they utilize and leverage their data as part of our long-term commitment to standards-based interoperability. This is particularly relevant for many of our clients, where the amount of data and speed in which it needs to be processed is growing exponentially."
Gentry also notes, "this is just one of many releases that we have planned over the next two years for both Adabas and Natural. Each of these releases is designed to deliver new, customer-driven capabilities while further simplifying the ongoing management of these mission-critical systems. By doing so, customers will continue to fully benefit from the unmatched speed, performance and reliability that they offer."
Natural SQL Gateway is available now. Expected availability of Event Replicator for Adabas on Open Systems is Q3 of 2008. Pricing and additional information is available from an authorized Software AG representative.
The announcement was made at the Software AG International User Groups Conference 2008, which is taking place this week in Seville, Spain. This independent event annually brings together Adabas, Natural, webMethods and CentraSite users from around the world to share best practices and review the latest developments relating to these mission-critical systems.

Software AG: Now the Third Largest Vendor in the Business Process Management Suites and Enterprise
RESTON, Va., Jun 27, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) --
Software AG, a global leader in business infrastructure software, today announced that according to Gartner, Inc, the company is now the third largest vendor globally for both business process management suites (BPMS) and enterprise service bus (ESB) solutions based on the company's 2007 market share(1). For 2006, prior to the acquisition of webMethods, Inc., the company was ranked fifth in total ESB software revenue and was not ranked among the top fifteen vendors for BPMS software revenue.
"We have set for ourselves the clear goal of becoming the independent market leader for both ESBs and BPMS. We have now achieved these objectives," said Karl-Heinz Streibich, CEO, Software AG. "We are now in the top three with IBM and Oracle in two rapidly growing markets. The acquisition of webMethods was clearly critical to this success."
Gartner credited Software AG with 93.5% growth in U.S. dollar terms in the ESB market in 2007, the best performance of any vendor covered in this report. Software AG's flagship offering for this market, the webMethods ESB, is a standards-based enterprise service bus (ESB) enabling integration and interoperability of applications, services, processes and partners via a single platform.
In the BPMS market, Software AG was recognized with total software revenue of $101.1 million. These results encompass sales and maintenance fees for webMethods BPMS, Software AG's full-feature process design, execution, monitoring and management solution. In terms of actual revenue in U.S. dollars, Software AG posted the biggest gain of any vendor recognized within the BPMS market.

Eco-computing: Software AG and the Hasso Plattner Institute Demonstrate SOA's Green Potential -
RESTON, Va., Jul 08, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) --
Software AG, a global leader in business infrastructure software, and the Potsdam-based Hasso Plattner Institute for Software Systems Engineering (HPI) today announced the successful completion of a one-year research project examining the impact of service-oriented architecture (SOA) governance on Green IT practices. Working together, the two organizations developed methods and tools for optimizing resource sharing of IT services, thereby reducing energy consumption and lowering hardware costs.
Heavy energy consumption and the associated economic and environmental impact that it creates has become one of the greatest challenges facing large datacenters. To counter this, the Operating Systems and Middleware team at the Hasso Plattner Institute and Software AG have conducted an "SOA Eco Runtime Governance" study. Using CentraSite, the top-ranked solution for SOA governance and service lifecycle management, the partners created a series of new policies that can be deployed in a service-oriented architecture. Using these policies, administrators of complex IT landscapes can determine exactly how much computing power they need as well as the maximum amount of energy each service may use, which helps them regulate and more tightly control energy costs. For example, policies within CentraSite were used to allocate resources between multiple services with these policies being modified as needed at runtime.
"Through SOA runtime governance, we can give IT departments additional options for distributing their available computing power more efficiently. In this context, CentraSite serves as the central hub with HPI's technology acting as a sentinel for the system resources. This means that users can reduce maintenance and energy costs for their hardware by consolidating resources," stated Guido Laures, Director of Product Management for SOA Governance at Software AG.
Prof. Andreas Polze, manager of HPI's Operating Systems and Middleware group, explains: "The eco-computing project is just one of our research projects in the field of operating systems. Our general focus is on new paradigms, architecture models, interfaces, and implementation technologies for supporting service-based systems. Besides resource management, our research addresses questions regarding implementation planning and charging of services."
CentraSite is a joint trademark of Fujitsu Limited and Software AG in the United States and other countries.
