Step 2 The material was a ductile iron to BS EN 1563 450/10. The specification controlled chemical analysis, mechanical test and hardness with each bearing being traceable to a certified melt number.

Step 3 Fettling the casting. This operation removes the runner and riser system and cleans any flash from the joint line. The casting is then shotblast, sent for stress relieving and finally tested by Magnetic Particle Inspection to check for cracks. No cracks were found.
