FirstAlert[tm] 7/14: Another Sure Drop? - Zibb.com

July 14, 2008 (FinancialWire) (By Genevieve Hawkins) Stocks were pressured heavily last week yet again as concerns about mortgage lenders Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac combined with the failure of IndyMac and yet another record high for crude oil. For last week the Dow lost 1.4% and booked its fourth straight weekly decline, while the Nasdaq dropped 0.3% and the S&P 500 slid 1.9%. With investors fixated on Freddie and Fannie, it is likely to be a volatile week, with wild swings based on news from multiple fronts. The coming week will be filled with a torrent of numbers from corporate earnings reports and economic indicators, with quarterly reports expected from bellwethers Citigroup and Google. Economic indicators of interest include inflation readings in the form of the consumer and producer price indexes and Fed minutes from the June 24-25 meeting. This information will be set against crude oil prices and the Fed's attempts to keep Freddie and Fannie afloat at all costs. A drop below the 11,000 mark for the Dow seems like almost a sure thing with so many different headwinds, but sure things lately have equaled an excess of short interest. There could be a sudden and dramatic rebound if the sky doesn't fall!
