Industry Sales Post Modest '07 Gains

Total industry sales rose 3.2% in 2007, to just under $25 billion, according to preliminary estimates released last week by the Association of American Publishers. The increase follows a year in which sales slipped 0.3%. The largest gain among the print segments was in adult hardcover, up 7.8%.

Book exports rose 7.2%, to $974.0 million, in the first half of 2007, according to estimates from the U.S. Department of Commerce. Shipments to India shot up the most in the period, to $22 million, making the fast-growing country the seventh largest market for books at the midway point of 2007.
